ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY (ECG)

It is the graphical recording of the electrical activity of the heart with surface electrodes applied to the skin. Although cardiology has the longest history, it maintains its importance in the diagnosis of some heart diseases and in the evaluation of heart rhythm disorders.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How is electrocardiography done?
While the patient is in the supine position, ECG is performed through electrodes applied to certain areas on the chest, arms and legs. It is painless, easy and fast.
No medication is used.

How long does an electrocardiography test take?
It takes up to a few minutes to have an electrocardiogram taken.

Is there any harm to the body of taking electrocardiography?
Electrocardiography does not cause any harm to the body. After the procedure, daily activities can be resumed.

What information does electrocardiography provide?
A simple electrocardiographic examination can provide a wide variety of information about your heart. However, not all information is permanent in electrocardiography. This is why electrocardiography may be normal, even though there is a serious underlying heart problem. For example, while there are some abnormalities in electrocardiography taken during chest pain or palpitations, the abnormalities may disappear completely after the chest pain or palpitations have passed. Therefore, electrocardiography taken at the time of complaint is valuable and may sometimes need to be repeated at frequent intervals. However, electrocardiographic evidence of a previous heart attack or thickening of the heart muscle is not easily lost. Therefore, keeping your old electrocardiograms is sometimes useful in comparison to evaluate new abnormalities.
